Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on Foreign Car Imports; Targets Countries Buying Venezuelan Oil

Trump Enacts 25% Tariffs on Auto Imports, Citing National Security

President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, placing a 25% tariff on imported cars and key auto parts. The move aims to address what the administration calls a national security threat.

The tariff targets imported passenger vehicles—including sedans, SUVs, minivans, and light trucks—as well as essential components like engines, transmissions, and powertrains. Additional parts may be added later.

Automakers under the USMCA can certify U.S. content to avoid full tariffs. For now, USMCA-compliant parts remain tariff-free, pending new systems from the Commerce Department and CBP to assess non-U.S. content value.
